"I think I want blue streaks in my hair," said the little voice inside my head, last weekend.
By Wednesday, I'd already made my way to the beauty supply store, and was doggedly searching for blue hair shadow. Yes, you heard me 'hair shadow.' Turns out it's all the rage among the 'tweens and teens. And now this 'closer-to-midlife than my twenties' woman was saying, "YOLO!" (You Only Live Once - by the way, douchiest phrase ever).
The drive to find said, 'hair shadow' overwhelmed me like the first surge of teenage hormones, which need to explode. Getting my hands on this product would be like gunning the gas pedal on a 300 horsepower car -- thrilling and necessary. I needed my hair fix.
When I walked into the store I asked the Asian woman behind the counter where the blue shadow was, she said, "No more." Of course, I was too late. Instead, I opted for purple. But only after toying with the idea of bright Bozo the Clown red, which would have just made me look like... Bozo the Clown.
My luscious locks, normally flecked with sundry streaks of silver, had been recently dyed dark brown. So really, blue would have just gotten lost in my mane. Red would have been ridiculous. Purple, the color of Royalty, was perfect.
Applying the shadow was messy, and tiny dust-sized drops of the chalky, talc ended up over my sink countertop. Then, I sealed the color with hairspray, which kept it on my hair & off of my clothes (but apparently not off of my pillowcase, when I fell asleep with it in my hair). All in all, it did look amazing.
Next morning, I jumped in the shower, and it washed right out with warm water. I guess you could say the hair shadow is a metaphor for life: You can apply, rinse and repeat with any color you like, whenever you want.
Just in case you were wondering what the heck I'm talking about, there's a lovely photo of the purple hair shadow by Colorsmash ($10.99), which I purchased. Expensive, yes. But worth every penny!
